What is the fuel tax?

It is a tax that aims to protect the sustainability of companies in the freight transport sector in the face of fluctuations in the prices of fuels necessary for the exercise of the activity.

This fee is sometimes referred to as a “Fuel Surcharge”.

When does it apply?

It applies to all shipments from companies authorized to transport goods.

However, each company independently determines how this tax is applied and how much it is.

In alfaloc, for special services («tailor-made») such as Rocket or Sharing, the fee is already included in the price of the service presented to the Customer. For shipments considered to be small, the exact amount of the fee is shown both in the quotation and in the invoice for the service.

When are fuel rates updated?

They are updated weekly and take effect on the Monday of each week.

How is the fuel surcharge calculated?

Value of the fuel surcharge (€) = value of the service (€) x fuel surcharge of the chosen medium (%)

What are fuel charges based on?

  • International service – Door-to-door and 24-hour express

This rate is based on Rotterdam’s jet fuel prices indicated by the US Department of Energy. For more information on jet fuel, see the U.S. Department of Energy’s Spot Prices of Jet Fuel page.

  • International Service – Daily Truck

This rate is based on diesel fuel prices, published by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport. For more information on diesel fuel, you can consult the Petroleum Bulletin at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport.

  • National service (“Domestic”, includes Madeira and Azores)

This rate is based on the average price of Road Diesel published by the Directorate-General for Geology and Energy. For more information on the average price of Road Diesel, you can consult the DGEG publication – Evolution of the Average Price of Gasoline and Diesel.
