Liquid Shipping

Care to be taken when transporting liquids

The transport of liquids requires even more special care.

There are essentially 3 reasons for this:

  • the instability/lack of information/danger of the liquid inside;
  • the fragility of the container: jar, bottle, tube or other;
  • the absence of proper handling by the carrier when liquids are not declared to be being transported.

There are liquids that are not dangerous in our daily lives.

But for transport the rule is different. In the transport of goods, it is enough to be a liquid for it to be considered dangerous.

It is no coincidence that we are not allowed to take ordinary water bottles when we travel by plane.

Alfaloc is here to help, and to make it easy.
Let’s do it?

We have prepared several contents so that you can have more information before sending liquids.

1. Which liquids are considered hazardous?

There are liquids that we use commonly and that are considered dangerous in the context of transport.

We are talking about:

  • glue;
  • oil;
  • ink;
  • varnish;
  • perfume;
  • sprays in general;

And others, such as:

  • lithium batteries (such as the one in the computer);
  • Aerosols;
  • or other similar products, which are considered flammable.

2. From what quantity are they considered dangerous?

Even in small samples, there are liquids that are considered hazardous. Especially if they are not identified. Even if it’s just a tube of glue.

3. What if I want to send wine or olive oil or other everyday product? Is it dangerous?

You will be considered dangerous if you are not identified.

You can send wine, olive oil, etc., as long as these products are mentioned on the waybill. (And always with great care in packaging!)

Attention: in several countries (Angola and China, for example), in order for a good such as wine to be cleared through customs, the recipient has to present his declaration of authorization for the import of this type of cargo.

4. What happens if I don’t plan to ship liquids?

When poorly planned, sending something as simple as small glue samples or perfume samples can turn into a very complex process.

After being collected, the boxes are subject to X-Ray, by the Security department.

Any liquid or liquid packaging is detected.

Once detected, there are several possibilities:

  1. If there is no information on how those liquids are being transported, the cargo is immediately returned, and your company will have to pay the costs of the return.
  2. If there is information on how liquids are being sent, but adequate documentation is missing, the shipment is stopped, and it is waiting for the documentation. Only after that will the cargo be able or not to continue its route. But there will be delays in the final delivery, compared to what he planned.
  3. If there is information on how liquids are being shipped and there is adequate documentation, the Security department analyzes and decides whether or not the goods can continue their journey

5. How do I ship liquids?

First of all: whenever you include any type of liquid in your shipment, describe it in the waybill.

This is the first step for everything to go well.

Don’t just put “samples”.

  • Even if it’s just a bottle of oil to help your customer get the mold working;
  • Even if it’s just a bottle of glue to help your customer glue the wooden pieces together;
  • Even if it’s just an empty paint can that has been decorated on the outside, like a work of art.

Accompany the waybill with the Safety Data Sheet of the liquids you are sending.

In this way, the Security department will analyze the X-ray of the goods along with this file, and decide if the shipment can continue to the recipient.

It is natural that doubts arise.
